Bold text fonts, words in italics, inside brackets, quotes etc. are weighted by the search engines. This will also help any inbound links from other sites.
Surfers can quickly pick up on important points inside the page, it makes sense that SE's will also.
As with all page design attributes, mix and match and always design for the human reader first. Search Engines will add any bold text to their overall page examination and return results as per their algorithm.
