Meta Data Tag Use

Ensure each page has a unique page title for your site

Help to Create a unique page title for every page of your website that is relevant to the article or overview of the page to be read. Each page should have a feel and look describing the article or product on display.

Tips: Many self generating web page programs will create an automatic page title spread across the pages. If you use such a program, ensure that each page has it's own page title. Even if this means changing the coding to achieve this.

Why have each page title unique?

Answer, you should best describe the page content that will be relevant to the search AND the content of that page. If a viewer reaches your page and it is not relevant, you can hope they continue through your site, however, many will immediately close the page. If you lose 'page online time' your site will quickly lower in the search results, so it is better to write content that matches the site title, and vice versa.

A title such as 'Excellent Web Page Design Home Page Tips' is inviting and relevant to this page. The search results will reflect what the page is about. The page title will be listed by the search engine results in the 'result pages'. If your page title is not matched to the content, then your rank is lowered and your listing will not be quickly retrieved on the first pages of a search engine. If you do not have each page clearly identified by the title, achieving a top website is very difficult.

If you have a double title tag within your pages coding, remove the double tag immediately

Accidental Double Tagging of Title, Description, Keyword tags may occur if you dont manipulate a database driven program or poorly establish-overwrite an older existing page. To check if you pages are 'tagged' correctly. Go to your page on the web, Choose View > Source.  A notepad source file will open. Then locate and read for any double listed titles, descriptions or any other meta tag. Get rid of all duplicates.

Remove which tag? Go to the search engine, find your page and read the title. Delete the other one.

How to check if each page is different. Open your editing software > Choose Web Site Properties > Summary. You will see the files associated with your web, the date modified, page properties, page titles, page size in bytes and other useful information.

Also use well written descriptions in your meta tags - help.

Often, the 'description' meta tag will be displayed within the search results. Write clearly inviting text that assists the persons search. Description tags are not always displayed in the search results, but they are always included in the overall algorithm of 'keyword matches' for your search string. Description tags that are longer than 120 characters are not shown. You should always count the characters and words in any tag.

Make every page with a unique page title and include one or two keywords written to invite the reader to open your page from the search string results. Dont repeat the keyword more than twice, better to have a plural version.
e.g. website websites

General Rule:

Title Tag > Less than 15 words, 80 Characters
Place your Main Keywords position 3 of your Title
Description Tag > Less than 32 Words, 200 Characters.
Place your main keywords position 3 of your description.
Keyword Tag > Less than 10 words. (write your keywords in phrases) (e.g. design tips website, 10 top websites) - written in alphabetical order, natural or random composition structure.

Using other Tags such as Keyword
Meta tags are less and less important, but are still included in the overall site phrase matching, page keyword sentence matching and location matching. All search engine algorithms are now so well developed and advanced, text and content rules.

Tips: If you use a database program that does not allow individual page titles, search around the web for an add-on or code insert that gives you this option.

Study the key points of the search

Study the results of the top 3 pages shown when you type in your keywords into the engines. Look at the results page. You will see the titles and keywords highlighted. If any are applicable to your aims, write your page titles in the format for your site. Carefully studying why those results are higher than yours will give you great insight into the reasons, design criteria and overall listings of the site. Learn More Studying a Site
