68What Search Engines Dont Like

It's important to understand that search engines are made to deliver the most accurate search result technically possible.

When optimizing your web pages, be very careful not to add anything that is ever posted in a forum that someone else says the search engines dont like.

Here are some of the main ones, that are regularly shown to be a distaste or difficult operation for the large and small engines.

What Search Engines Dont Like.

  1. Certain applications of Javascript - Javascript elements are often hard to archive and in particular if they contain or generate links without having the full name in the page. If you use a java scripted menu, ensure that you also have full length static hypertext links through out your pages.

Javascript can not influence your initial page rank in way. So choose wisely. Not all JavaScript's are lost. Some are portions of a total outcome. This means, a lighter weight script may work better for links on certain pages, or a heavier, long tail script may perform a 'write.doc' command that does have potential to be indexed. Choose wisely.
Be sure to add normal static hypertext links inside your content. Just like you see in all our content and some inside the navigations.

  1. Server Side Image Maps - As with any functionality over the web, if a script or command needs to communicate a contact with the web server in order to operate, it will fail when indexing or when archived. This is particularly referenced by the larger engines that have a multi tier page capture and storage/retrieval system. Smaller search engines that use flat files may over come this slightly, but optimizing a page should be for the large engines.
Older Style Image Maps - An image map uses one graphic for everything - and the webmaster maps out zones over the parts of the image which contain navigation words. Because only one image is used, the bots find it difficult to create a relationship with the URL.

  2. Bandwidth time out issues - If your site is hosted by a really slow server with lots of hops, you will probably suffer time out issues by the spiders. Spiders have time limit constraints or switches that redirect a page to a more local spider, if they fail because your web host loads your sends your data via Venus, New York, back to Mars, down to you etc, You lose.

  1. Not being listed in other major indexes. If your site is only in one of the majors it will be hard to gain enough traffic to be noticed. Add your site to genuine databases only. Don't bother with 'ad creating databases' or 'spamdexes'. Genuine only is the way.

  2. Duplication, Copies and Retardant Pages. The internet is now so well developed, you find lots of websites offering a 'comparison' page that scans the web looking for duplicates. The search engines have had this since the beginning. To truly achieve a Top Ten site, make it yours with your works.

  3. Bad Hyperlinks - Bad hyperlinks that go nowhere important. Learn to assess your entire domain and looks for a spread of primary, secondary and tertiary relevance that creates 3-4 pages of importance.

This simple diagram shows how your site can be made for Page Rank legitimately. The better your site's navigation (pointing or referencing) to another page, the better that page's rank in terms of value. This applies to both your audience and SE.

  1. Flat Text Files - If you use a search program inside your pages that relies on a flat file, the spider will probably not take any notice. When is the last time you got back a search engine result with the extension .txt  ???? For a file that relies on flat text files, it's controlling template must write the page in a valid html form and not rely on any session id's or headers sent etc. Some CRM and Forums rely upon this 'include' instruction. Choose wisely before starting any CRM system.

  2. What search engines dont like is when people try to trick them. Cloaking, Doorway, Re-Direct etc. If you consider the intellectual talent working at all the major companies AND THAT... they've seen it all before. If you try to trick the SE's it's a waste of time. Better to optimize your website for the searcher.

  3. Flash, Frames, Non HTML etc, etc. Keep with the common formats.

  4. A page full of Ads, actually, we hate that.

  5. A site with no bookmarks - Add a favicon to every page. It's really easy. This Favorite Icon page has a free Icon Generator.

  6. Broken Links - Examine your pages over and over, get rid of broken links. It's vital that you do this, it's also very hard with large site but you must to achieve a higher site rank.

  7. Quickly refreshing pages. If you have a 'welcome' page that immediately refreshes to a new page, it may be considered as a 'spam' page. Remove that coding immediately.

  8. Search Box Only Pages - Pages that can only be reached by a form are not followed.

As a rule of thumb... simple HTML is the best for web page optimization.
