65Get a faster loading site for SEO

The faster you pages load, the better for your audience, AND for Search Engine Optimization.

For surfers, a fast downloading site is an easy to understand benefit, for the SE's, it allows them to move through more pages.

So what to do if my site is traditionally slow?

  • Build pure HTML pages around your slow pages that contain (non duplicate) information that can be spidered quickly.
  • Add lots of hypertext links inside those pages to the faster ones.
  • Remove as much 'slow operating' parameters as possible
  • Provide 'text only' versions of the page.
  • Optimize your images down to a lower color value.
  • Remove or reduce as much as possible any script in the code view
  • Remove any non essential tables or options if your using a php or asp database driven systems that is not relevant to that page.

Structure your page for speed

After reading of text and hyperlinks, the load speed of your (priority) pages is an important website design factor.

2. Make hyperlinks work harder

3. Present the core issue as text

Anything that is truly important for your site's web page should be in a text based format. There is a fine balance for design and SEO, however, for true SEO, Pictures and graphics are a secondary element for search engine optimization.

4. Remove anything unnecessary

Go over the your page and look for anything not necessary to the surfer. Remove flashing pics, scrolls, side window color bar, javascript rollovers, moving pictures etc. A handy tip is to find a web page download time meter. Compare different elements of the page at various stages of design.

5. Avoid nested tables

Tables inside tables inside tables. If you can alter the code design of your tables for less code. Browsers required longer time to render nested tables than non nested. For the search engines, it reduces your PTTR Ratio

6. Add a CSS Style Sheet

CSS authors the code across many pages via one (1) single import. This significantly reduces the spidered code by the search engines and returns a higher doc server PTTR.
For example, you could replace this code:

<div align="right"><font face="Tahoma, Arial, Verdana, Sans Serif" color="#008000" size="3"><b>This is the rendered text</b></font></div>

To something like this:

<div class="style1">this is the rendered text</div>

The result, 3 lines reduced to one of code and content.

7. Optimize your images

a) Reopen your images in Photoshop, Fireworks, Corel paint etc and choose the 'save for web' features. Lower the color output to 256, 128, 64 colors. If you are using a custom button for navigation, try using 16 or 8 colors. You may find the color reduction actually does not effect the visual, it will help the size.

b) Remove any long winded gif animations. If animation is really needed, use less frames within your files. Reduce the color load by optimizing the images as suggested above.

c) Define the width and height of the pictures. Browsers need longer time to calculate non 'size specified' pics.

d) Consider using smaller images.
