Every Monitor displays color and
fonts differently.
Screen
Sizes
If you website looks great on a CRT monitor, it may look pale and
lacking lustre on a flat screen digital, dark on a older screen or
unreadable on a mobile screen.
Test your site across different computers and
screens.
Look at your website design and pages on lots of
different systems, give preference to using Web Colors that are
suitable for multi purposes. Use small byte graphics and remove any
pixilated images.
Design your site a little darker allowing for
light digital monitors.
Use Gif and Jpeg imagery
If you need pictures, mix up the gif and jpeg
formats, include png files when needed and use file formats suitable
for multibrowsing. Never use .bmp for your site. bmp is not received
by lots of non-window systems. Generally bmp is larger.
Gif's are a palette based color system that
average the color range to 256 colors. The pixels can also be
transparent. Use Gifs for buttons and icons.
Jpeg's are a higher loaded color pixel system that
allows millions of pixel color choices, most are not recognized by
the human eye. Use Jpeg's for photos, save for the web at 85%
optimisation.
When using images, add the 'alt text' function
because many people will have images disabled in their browser.
Search engines also index and provide a relationship index of image
descriptions.
Window Sizes
Finding the right size and width for your website is almost
impossible. Today, most users will not purchase a monitor less than
17'' (remember the double quotes tips - article 34) so a window size
equally 840 pixels is OK, however, as more and more mobile
telephone, hand held computers etc become used, it may also be of
benefit to your web site design to offer a 'window' size option
using CSS.
Do not design for a specific monitor screen size, but keep within a
ratio of 1024 x 728 pixels at 72 dpi. Design for RGB application
viewing.
Use columns set at particular widths to ensure the basic layout
structure, allow other fields to be fluid.
Tips:
If you decide a cell must always remain a particular width, create a
thin line as a picture. Insert that picture line into the cell. This
will ensure that the cell never collapses.
Summary
There will always be different variations because people use
different browsers, monitor sizes, monitor resolutions, font sizes
and other factors that are beyond any standard or control. With this
in mind, you can design your new website for easy use.
More people
are purchasing flat screens that display color in a brighter format.
Design for the future.
