Search Engine Optimisation Tips
The
heading 1 and heading 2 tags
All major search engines are aimed at providing customers with
accurate and relevant pages when a search is performed.
So if you're providing great info, up to date
pages etc, make certain that each page contains at least one <h1>
Heading One tag OR the <h2> Heading Tag.
Examples (this is h2)
This site utilizes both the <h1> tag once per
page... and,
The <h2> tag once or multiple times.
Why use the heading 1 tag once only?
Spamming. If you use the most visible tag size
more than once, it's like a newsletter headline. Keep it shorter
than 8-9 words with one (1) keyword if appropriate. Using the H1 tag
more than once may be deemed as engine spamming and is negatively
weighted. Also, why use more than once when you can catch the
readers attention with a H2.
Why use the heading 2 tag more than once?
You can use the H2 tag a few times without being
irrelevant or deemed as spamdexing. The Heading two tag is a great
visual way to add more power to categories or splits in your
articles. This site, all the bolder headlines with a thin gray
underline are H2 tags.
For example: Headings are like the page
title that can be worked inside the page for genuine reasons to
pinpoint the area that may be of most interest to the reader, and
highlight the importance of the words expressed. If you are making a
website that needs punchy, powerful sections, always use the H2 tag.
For the title section of the page, use the H1 tag.
There are six different options available in HTML
headlines. Only use the H1 and H2 tag. The others can be better
controlled by using a CSS style sheet.
The best way (placement) to use headings is as
close as possible to the first sentence of the page.
If you can not place the heading close to the top
because of a table layout or menu systems etc, ensure that your
major headline is close to a paragraph of text.
Overall, the use of headlines is common practice
when you want a section to be highlighted as important. Search
engines also apply the same strategy believing most webmasters are
honestly displaying their wares to the reader in a clear manner.
Extended Reading
Underlying Code and Heading tags

Code Tags
Only ever place one keyword per headline if this
suits the article talked about. If you need more than one keyword
per title, make certain that any textual paragraphs clearly match
the title.

Changing Headline Colors (this is h2)
You can control colors and sizes of headlines with an external style
sheet. CSS
Add a code line like this inside your CSS Style Sheet to manipulate
the display result and colors for headings. It will not affect the
underlying code that search engines read to determine the size of
headline.
CSS Manipulation
h1 {font-size: 1.0em;margin: 0 0 5px 0;padding:
2px 0px 10px 0px;color: #333333;}
h2 {font-size: 1.3em;margin: 0 0 5px 0;padding: 2px 0px 10px
0px;color: #808080;}
h3 {font-size: 1.0em;margin: 0 0 5px 0;padding: 2px 0px 0px 0px;}
Tip
There is no longer any reason to use lesser sized
headings. H4 etc.
Tip
Only use one H1 heading per page.
Restrict H2 tags to less than 4 per page.
Keep in mind,
If you create pages with the viewer in
mind, no search engine will penalize you. If you attempt to spam,
those same SE companies employ hundreds of personnel with lots of
skill in recognizing attempts by webmasters to spamdex.
Use the Heading capabilities of your design software...
A H1 or H2 placed immediately after the <body> coding can be
adjudged by SE's as a priority placement. The best way to provide
better content to your audience is to make sure your pages are code
friendly. Heading tags have been in use on the web since conception.
